Accessibility statement
We want everyone to be able to enjoy this site, whatever device or assistive technology they use.
Our standard
This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We have assessed it ourselves; it has not been independently audited.
What we have checked
Contrast. Text and links meet the Level AA contrast requirements on every page.
Structure. Each page has a single main heading and a logical heading order, so screen readers and reader views present the page as it appears.
Keyboard. Every link and button can be reached with the keyboard, in reading order, with a visible focus outline. A “Skip to content” link is the first item on every page.
Images. Pictures have descriptive alternative text. Purely decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
Motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, all animation is turned off. The reviews, the Q&A and the essays remain fully readable with JavaScript disabled.
Video. The book trailer has closed captions, switched on by default, and a full transcript on the trailer page. The video never plays on its own.
Zoom. Pages reflow without sideways scrolling at widths down to 320 pixels, the equivalent of 400% zoom on a typical laptop.
Testing so far
The site has been tested in a desktop browser, and every page was checked with the axe-core automated accessibility checker against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA rules, with no issues found. Automated tools catch only some problems, so this is not a guarantee. The site has not yet been tested with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver or Narrator, or with voice control, switch access, screen magnification or Windows High Contrast mode.
Known limitations
The photograph of the author on The Author page may lose sharpness when the page is enlarged.
The policy and credit links at the foot of each page are set in small type.
If you apply your own line and letter spacing, the menu button may sit slightly past the right edge of the screen on narrow devices. It still works normally.
The trailer’s captions and transcript were transcribed from the soundtrack and may still contain small errors. The trailer does not have an audio description of its pictures. If you spot a mistake or would like the action described, please let us know.
Links to retailers, publications and Facebook take you to sites we do not control, and their accessibility is the responsibility of their owners.
